Educational Partners

The Neuberger is pleased to partner with other Holocaust education organizations.

IHRA canada

Canada became the 27th member of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) on June 24, 2009 in Oslo, Norway. Canada is the host chair for 2013. The Neuberger is a member organization focusing on education. Visit the IHRA online at holocaustremembrance.com.

In honour of the Canadian chair year of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, Arts and Culture proudly supports the Neuberger's Holocaust Educator Study Tour 2013 as an educational partner.

The Neuberger is proud to be working on a special speaker development initiative for Holocaust survivor speaking engagements with students and museum visitors, made possible with support from the Conference on Jewish Material Claims against Germany, Inc.

Azrieli Foundation logo

The Azrieli Foundation established their Series of Holocaust Survivor Memoirs to collect, preserve and share the stories written by survivors of the 20th century Nazi genocide of the Jews of Europe who later made their way to Canada. The memoirs are distributed free-of-charge to libraries, educational institutions and are also available for free download from the Azrieli website.

AHMS logoThe Neuberger hosted its first Gedenkdiener, or Holocaust Memorial Intern, in 2010. Raffael Stuhlpfarrer interned at the Centre from 2010-2011. Subsequently, the Centre hosted Gedenkdiener Aron Coman-Mikó from February-July 2012, and Andreas Schnitzer for the 2012-2013 year. Currently, our Gedenkdiener is Stefan Hammerl.

The Austrian Holocaust Memorial Service (Gedenkdienst) is an independent alternative to Austria's compulsory national military service. Its participants serve at major Holocaust institutions. The first participant started in 1992 at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum. Since then, over 400 Austrian Holocaust Memorial Servants have been working with major Holocaust memorial institutions in 23 countries worldwide. The intent of the AHMS is to recognize Austria's part of the collective responsibility for the Holocaust. The Neuberger is proud to welcome Gedenkdiener interns.

Stefan Hammerl is the current and fourth memorial servant sent by the Austrian Service Abroad organization. He is working with the Sarah and Chaim Neuberger Holocaust Education Centre from 1 August 2013 until 31 July 2014.

Stefan was born and grew up in Vienna, Austria. His branch of study in the Technical Industry Museum (TGM), a higher technical school, was industrial engineering with a special focus on bilingual-logistics. After graduation, he chose to do the Holocaust Memorial Service instead of the compulsory Austrian military service. The Austrian Service Abroad organization helped him to prepare for his stay in Toronto. Before arriving in Toronto, he has done some presentations related to the subject, participated in interviews of contemporary witnesses, and visited museums and memorials. Stefan is pleased to work with school groups and teachers during his stay in Canada.
